i2 Inspiration; Product/Color: Net Effect carpet tile in Atlantic

Twenty-five years ago, Interface considered the question “How would nature design a floor?” The answer: nature is random. That’s the source of its beauty.

“In nature, there are no two things that are the same,” says David Oakey, founder of David Oakey Designs and exclusive product designer for Interface. “There are similarities in the colors of leaves or bark, but nothing is identical. This completely shifted the design mindset for flooring at the time, which called for defined patterns and perfection."

Design Thinking that Mimics Nature

Oakey embraced this new way of thinking and created Entropy™, a carpet tile style designed to be installed in random ways. Entropy’s unique design simplified installation and meaningfully reduced waste. With tiles made to blend effortlessly, rather than match exactly, it allowed customers to adapt their floorscapes over time. And quickly became one of Interface’s best-selling styles.

Entropy took modular carpet to a new level. And it was only the first product in what would later be known as Interface’s i2™ platform. Today, Interface offers a breadth of i2 carpet tile styles that reflect the wonderful randomness of nature.

“i2 is still an important design platform for us,” explains Oakey. “You still have some customers who want perfection and a pattern that is more defined, but our biggest global customers love the intention and the aesthetic of the random designs.”

Open Road: Flexibility at Every Step

Recently, Interface expanded its i2 portfolio with the Open Road™ collection. It joins a toolkit of carpet tile solutions that are made to deliver style and performance with every installation - all at a smart price point.

The collection explores i2 from two distinct perspectives. Free Reign™ is an organic style that captures the dynamic look of granite seams, while Come and Go™ is a geometric style that blends contrast and texture to create a unique floorscape.

“Nature is one of our favourite designers,” says Kelly Simcox, Head of Global Design at Interface. "By taking modularity to the next level, our customers experience ultimate flexibility and adaptability over time. As one of our latest interpretations of i2, Open Road shows how we continue to embrace this innovative approach to design, pushing the boundaries of form and function.”
