Sustainability & Transparency

What is Interface’s approach to sustainability?

At Interface, we’re ‘all in’ on solving the climate crisis, building on more than 30 years of pioneering leadership. And we’re doing it with a bold ambition: to be carbon negative by 2040, without offsets.

Our strategy is simple: avoid, reduce, and store as much carbon as possible across our value chain. By using low‑carbon and carbon‑storing inputs, and innovating how our products are made, we reduce emissions at the source and store more carbon in the products themselves.

And we don’t just set goals—we verify progress. Our product footprints, third‑party‑verified disclosures, and advancement toward our 2030 science‑based targets show real, measurable reductions across our portfolio. Transparency is how we help inspire broader industry change.

Check out our Impact Report for more insight into our latest sustainability efforts and the meaningful action we’re taking to support our people and the communities we serve.

Does Interface use carbon offsets?

No. Interface is prioritizing direct carbon reductions—not offsets—to meet the urgency of the climate crisis. We’re ‘all in’ on becoming carbon negative by 2040 and redirecting former carbon offset investments into projects that accelerate carbon reduction and storage.

This approach builds on our legacy as pioneers in carbon neutrality. In 2003, we introduced one of the first carbon neutral product programs for carpet tile, and in 2022, we became the first flooring manufacturer to be a third-party certified Carbon Neutral Enterprise. In 2020, we developed the world’s first carbon negative carpet tile.

Today, our ‘all in’ strategy builds on that foundation as we avoid, reduce, and store more carbon across our products, operations, and supply chain.

How does Interface measure and report sustainability progress?

Interface measures our sustainability progress using third‑party verified tools, including Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), and full accounting of our Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions aligned with our science‑based targets (SBTs) which are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

We share our results transparently through our annual Impact Report, which details our carbon footprint, emissions reductions, and progress toward our 2030 and 2040 goals.

Where can I access Interface’s latest Impact Report or ESG disclosures?

All reports are available in the Sustainability ESG Progress or Investor Relations sections of the Interface website, including full environmental metrics and third-party verifications.

Can Interface Products be Recycled?

Yes! Interface designs our products with the full life cycle in mind. Through Interface regional ReEntry® reuse and reclamation programs, you can return eligible products at the end of their use phase. We then reuse, recycle, or repurpose materials—giving them a next life and keeping them out of the waste stream.

Since 2016, our global ReEntry programs have recovered 96.2 million pounds of post-consumer carpet.

We believe circularity starts with design. And good design never ends.

What does circularity mean at Interface?

At Interface, circularity means designing flooring to stay in use longer and reduce impact at every stage of its life cycle. It's not just about what happens at end of life. It's about how products are designed, made, used, renewed, and what comes next.

Our approach focuses on three key areas:

  • Design products to use less material, last longer, and reduce waste.
  • Use Materials with recycled, bio-based, and captured-carbon inputs to help lower embodied carbon.
  • Support renewal through reuse, recycling, and material recovery programs where available.

By thinking about the full life cycle, we keep materials in use, reduce waste, and support progress on our goal of becoming carbon negative by 2040.

How does circularity help reduce carbon emissions?

Circularity drives carbon reduction. By using less virgin material, extending product life, incorporating recycled, bio-based, and captured-carbon materials, and enabling reuse and recycling, circular design can help lower a product's carbon footprint.

The products you specify today influence future carbon outcomes. Choosing materials designed for longevity and recovery can help reduce embodied carbon while advancing your sustainability goals and Interface’s commitment to becoming carbon negative by 2040.

Carbon & Climate Action

How can I calculate the carbon footprint of an Interface product?

Each product’s embodied carbon footprint is listed under Health & Environmental Specifications on the product detail page within our website.[CN1] [VL2]

You can also use the Interface Carbon Calculator to view cradle‑to‑gate carbon data for any of our flooring products. The self-serve tool is simple to use and includes the following:

  • Automatic calculations for flooring type, style, and quantity
  • A one-page downloadable Carbon Impact Statement (CIS) for projects
  • A comparison chart showing the carbon footprint of Interface products alongside the industry-average carbon footprint
  • Complete data transparency
  • Visual references of emission equivalents avoided (e.g. cars not driven)

For more detailed disclosures, each product also has a third‑party verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) summary that reports its carbon footprint in kilograms of CO₂‑equivalent.

What does carbon negative mean at Interface?

A carbon negative product stores more carbon than is emitted during its creation, when measured cradle to gate. At Interface, we achieve carbon negative carpet tiles by replacing higher‑footprint raw materials with low carbon and carbon‑storing alternatives, including bio‑based and captured‑carbon inputs.

Our carbon negative products

Interface created the world’s first cradle‑to‑gate carbon negative carpet tile in 2020. Today, we offer hundreds of carpet tile styles that can be carbon negative when paired with our CQuestBioX™ backing. The products meet the same performance requirements with a carbon negative footprint.

In 2025, we unveiled the industry’s first carbon negative nora® rubber flooring prototype, which also stores more carbon than it emits during manufacturing.

Our carbon negative ambition

To meet the urgency of the climate crisis, we’re focusing on absolute carbon reduction and carbon storage innovation across all of our product categories. And challenging ourselves and others to become carbon negative, without offsets.

Since 1994, we’ve focused on reducing our environmental footprint—an effort that led us to eliminate our negative impact in 2019. Today, we’re pushing further with a goal to become carbon negative by 2040. Our 2030 science-based targets (SBTs), validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), serve as an important waypoint on our path.

We’re making progress by lowering our carbon footprint through better design, with lower-carbon raw materials, and ongoing innovation across our product categories. Since 2019, we’ve made measurable progress across our portfolio:

  • Carpet tile carbon footprint is down 40%
  • LVT carbon footprint is down 45%
  • Rubber carbon footprint is down 24%

These reductions reflect how we’re designing products to use less material, last longer, and reduce impact across the full life cycle. By increasing the use of recycled, bio-based, and captured-carbon materials, we continue to lower embodied carbon across our products.

The result? Flooring with some of the lowest carbon footprints in the commercial flooring industry—and continued progress on our path to carbon negative.

How does Interface measure and verify its carbon negative claims?

Interface uses independent, third‑party verified tools and transparent reporting to back every carbon negative claim. We conduct third‑party verified Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) to measure the carbon footprint of our products and publish Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that disclose this data using globally recognized standards.

External verifiers confirm our LCAs, EPDs, recycled content, and carbon‑storing material claims. We also share our progress openly through our annual Impact Reports.

In the past, Interface purchased offsets and was third-party verified as a carbon neutral enterprise. Today we’re focused on prioritizing direct carbon reductions—not offsets—to meet the urgency of the climate crisis. We’re ‘all in’ on becoming carbon negative by 2040 and redirecting former carbon offset investments into projects that accelerate carbon reduction and storage.

Where can I learn more about Interface’s carbon negative journey?

You can explore Interface’s carbon negative journey on our sustainability page and view our annual Impact Report for details on our progress toward becoming carbon negative. Plus, follow along with our sustainability journey on Instagram and LinkedIn.

What are bio-based materials and how are they used at Interface?

Bio-based materials come from renewable sources like plant-derived polymers. Interface uses bio-based materials to replace more carbon-intensive, petroleum-based ingredients in products like carpet tile backings and rubber flooring. This helps reduce overall product carbon footprints and, in some cases, contributes to carbon storage.
