Holistic Design – Designing spaces with humans in mind

In any interior, the floor is fundamental. It has a huge impact on both the look and feel of a space. At Interface, we create floors that combine visual appeal, functional performance and design freedom. We do this with modular carpet, a concept we invented to meet the fast-changing needs of the workplace.

We always look at the bigger picture. Every carpet tile we make is designed to be part of a floor, every floor is part of a space and every space has a purpose. We also feel we are part of something bigger. We have a responsibility to leave the Earth a better place than we found it. Read on to find out what inspires and motivates us.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts

Aristotle observed that a combination of disparate elements can have impressive results. This kind of thinking sums up our approach to design – the modular nature of our products lends itself to creative design, with striking individual carpet tiles that can be put together in endless combinations to create unique designs. Whether using the same product to create a uniform design, or combining different collections, colourways or textures to add variety and diversity – modular flooring offers the flexibility to bring your design vision to life.

The freedom to design

The modularity of our products enables design-by-tile, the freedom to design inspiring floors at any scale. We create designs with the user in mind. We know that flooring can make a major contribution to how people feel in the workplace. The goal is to make it easy for them to do their job, and make them feel good while doing it. Different styles, textures or colours can also help wayfinding or create zones in an open office.

Performing  on the highest level

Our modular carpet has functional benefits as well. It is known for its hardwearing qualities, and the modular design allows it to be selectively replaced, saving time and cost in the long run. We test every product to make sure it contributes to sound acoustics and better indoor air quality. We look beyond the tile itself, developing new installation methods, custom maintenance programmes and backings with added functionality.

Nature as an inspiration and a role model

At Interface, we continuously try to learn from nature. We look at nature for solutions to the problems we face and incorporate biophilic design principles to bring natural analogues to the indoor environment.

The practice of biomimicry is to ‘imitate life’, emulating nature’s time tested strategies to solve complex problems. This has inspired new designs and ways of thinking – from our use of raw materials to the way that we do business.

Humans innate desire for nature, and the growing disconnect between the workspace and the natural environment, inspired the development of our first ‘biophilic’ product, Urban Retreat, a carpet tile that incorporates natural elements like variation and transition.

In 2014 we commissioned the "Human Spaces Report" to study the impact biophilic design in the workplace. It shows a significant increase in productivity (6%), creativity (15%) and wellbeing (15%) when there are natural elements present. Our Human Spaces platform has become a place to exchange knowledge about biophilic design and wellbeing in workplace.

Contributing to a better world

Interface was one of the first companies to publicly commit to sustainability. Our Mission Zero® promise to eliminate all our negative impact on the environment by the year 2020 has had profound consequences for our company, our products and even the way we do business.

Our modular flooring is developed to inspire and delight our customers and improve their wellbeing. We call it designing spaces with humans in mind.
