Over the last 15 years, curious designers and innovators of all walks of life have been revisiting the inspiration and guidance from the time-tested strategies of the other 30 million species on Earth.

Biophilia is the theory that humans have a biological need to connect with nature and that this connection affects our well-being, productivity and relationships. It gave rise to biophilic design, an offshoot of the sustainability movement that seeks to integrate nature and structure, even in the most urban spaces. At Interface, we use design to bridge the gap between these seemingly divergent environments.

Shape Your Floor with De Stijl

Looking back at historical design movements, one style struck a chord with hospitality product stylist Sarah Pelham in relation to Interface Hospitality’s product dimensions—De Stijl. De Stijl was popular from 1917-1931 and was built on the geometric principle of straight lines, squares and rectangles. Interface Hospitality has developed a collection of square and rectangular products that work together as building blocks that allow you to create your own floor using a combination of sizes.

License to Chill

Interface Hospitality makes it easy to achieve a seasonal shift in your space with our modular carpet products. Accent rugs are a simple, cost effective way to refresh your interior’s seasonal mood. Sarah Pelham explains in her latest blog.

On Being Inspired

When your world is communicated through the medium of squares, the idea of a rectangle is radical indeed. In a moment of unbridled geometric experimentation, we created the skinny plank. We were so excited about the possibilities of planks as a new modular carpet format that we felt it demanded new collaborators to express its potential. So Interface became the real life client for a class of 14 students at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta. Wildly collaborative, the experience inspired us and the students’ work is sure to inspire all who experience it.

SCAD and Interface Collaboration

As we considered a unique way to inspire designers with our skinny planks, we realized we needed a partner who could offer a new point of view. So we opted for a group of talented multi-media design students from Atlanta’s Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). They were young and unfamiliar with our industry. Who better to give a fresh perspective?

Raising the Bar

The Bullitt Foundation creates an inspiring net positive office building that aims to be the most eco-friendly building in America and the first structure of its size to achieve Living Building certification.

A Foundation for Beautiful Thinking

Designs inspired by Nature have been around as long as we have. There’s even a term for our innate affinity to nature - biophilia. And design that incorporates natural elements – biophilic design – fosters the kind of creativity and beautiful thinking that move the world. At Interface the connection between Nature and people is literally and figuratively woven into every square and plank of carpet we produce.

Human Spaces

Interface’s global Human Spaces Report is building the case for biophilic design. Led by renowned organizational psychologist Professor Sir Cary Cooper, the report reveals that employees who work in environments with natural elements have a higher level of well-being, are more productive and more creative.
