Carpet to Carpet Recycling
You hear a lot of claims about recycling these days, and it can be hard to separate fact from fiction, rumor from reality. "Recyclable" is often just a promise.
In fact, over four billion pounds of carpet end up in landfills each year in the US. While about 14% of post-consumer carpet is collected (according to CARE), less than 5% of that is recycled. But at Interface we have been actively collecting and recycling post-consumer vinyl backed carpet tiles – ours and our competitors’ - for over 20 years.
Since 1995, we’ve reclaimed more than 360 million pounds of carpet in the Americas, feeding it through our Cool Blue™ system to create a 98% recycled content backing that is as high in quality and performance as our celebrated GlasBac®.
Most valuable to us is our own LVT and any approved vinyl backed carpet tile. Contrary to reports, vinyl is highly recyclable! Our ReEntry program is 3rd party certified in our Green Circle Certified Environmental Facts. It’s one of the main reasons we continue to use PVC, which contributes to us having the lowest carbon footprint in the industry.
We work with collection partners all over the US, and we’re always looking for more, including you. You can include this ReEntry specification as part of your waste diversion strategy for your project.
REALITY CHECK: LOOK FOR POST-CONSUMER RECYCLED CONTENT IN YOUR FLOORING. IS IT FROM OLD CARPET PRODUCTS THAT HAVE BEEN RECLAIMED POST-USE?
