When it comes to addressing global climate change, we’re not just blowing hot air.
Interface is continually striving to push the limits in sustainability, and in our Americas manufacturing sites, we have reduced our direct Greenhouse Gas emissions by 99% since 1996!
Of course, true sustainability requires building a sustainable system, which is way we don’t stop there. Every phase of our carpet tile’s lifecycle—from harvesting raw materials to manufacturing, shipping, vacuuming and end-of-life recycling—results in the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that contribute to global warming. That’s what “carbon footprint” means. Through intelligent product design and improving our raw materials, we have reduced our average product’s carbon footprint by 34% since 2008, and across our business we have the lowest carbon footprint product in the industry.
Why should you care about carbon footprints? Buildings contribute to global climate change not only by direct use of energy for heating and cooling, but also by the carbon emitted into the atmosphere to make all the materials needed to build them. According to Architecture 2030, reducing this “embodied carbon” in building products like ours is the most urgent challenge of all, and that’s why we continue to invest in reducing our direct impacts as well as in carbon offsets for our products’ entire lifecycle. We were the first company to adopt Architecture 2030’s Challenge for Products, and we are holding ourselves accountable to even greater reductions by 2020.
We calculate all remaining GHG emissions for the entire lifecycle of our products and invest in verified emission reduction projects to offset them. We call this Cool Carpet™ and it comes standard on all Interface products sold in North America.
We balance every pound of GHG emissions with pounds of cool carbon offsets. That means we invest in renewable energy and other projects that prevent GHG emissions from entering the atmosphere. We purchase certified carbon offset credits generated by the replacement of natural gas boilers with biomass boilers for Mid American growers, one of the largest single site commercial growing operations in the United States. We also purchase offset credits generated through critical activities to reduce deforestation.
Cool Carpet neutralizes all of these emissions, but we’re constantly searching for ways to stop GHG emissions before they start, and we encourage our vendors and partners to do the same. SGS, a third-party verifier, validated the methodology we use to calculate our GHG emissions and verified that they were offset through verified emission reduction credits.
The Cool Carpet program is reviewed annually to make sure we’re bringing you the most innovative, environmentally friendly carpet offered today.
