A Foundation for Beautiful Thinking
Designs inspired by Nature have been around as long as we have. There’s even a term for our innate affinity to nature - biophilia. And design that incorporates natural elements – biophilic design – fosters the kind of creativity and beautiful thinking that move the world. At Interface the connection between Nature and people is literally and figuratively woven into every square and plank of carpet we produce.

On Being Inspired
When your world is communicated through the medium of squares, the idea of a rectangle is radical indeed. In a moment of unbridled geometric experimentation, we created the skinny plank. We were so excited about the possibilities of planks as a new modular carpet format that we felt it demanded new collaborators to express its potential. So Interface became the real life client for a class of 14 students at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta. Wildly collaborative, the experience inspired us and the students’ work is sure to inspire all who experience it.
SCAD and Interface Collaboration
As we considered a unique way to inspire designers with our skinny planks, we realized we needed a partner who could offer a new point of view. So we opted for a group of talented multi-media design students from Atlanta’s Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). They were young and unfamiliar with our industry. Who better to give a fresh perspective?

Serving Schools Around the World with Green Apple
Working at Interface, our commitment to close the loop and make our carpet out of 100% recycled materials has made us incredibly aware of the scarcity of natural resources. In our hurried, fast-paced, and busy lives, it takes real effort to slow down and focus on what matters.

Looking back at historical design movements, one style struck a chord with hospitality product stylist Sarah Pelham in relation to Interface Hospitality’s product dimensions—De Stijl. Interface Hospitality has developed a collection of square and rectangular products that work together as building blocks that allow you to create your own floor using a combination of sizes.

Interface Introduces Human Nature at NeoCon 2014
Interface’s latest global carpet tile collection, Human Nature, takes its cues from the visual, tactile textures found in the most elemental of floor coverings – think forest floors, grassy fields and pebbled garden paths. Human Nature includes five skinny plank styles.
Interface’s Human Nature™ Collection—a range of Skinny Planks™ carpet tiles that remind us of the materials, textures and tones we find in the natural world—is inspired by the vital, mysterious link between the nature as we observe and this same nature within ourselves. It helps answer the question we always ask when seeking inspiration—'how would nature create an interior floor?' The Human Nature Collection is available globally from Interface.
