New Interface Carpet Tile Helps to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Conscient Collection Contributes to Optimal Health and Wellbeing for Building Occupants

Architects and designers continue to seek out new solutions for critical problems in the built environment, including issues such as poor indoor air quality, proven to affect the health, wellbeing and productivity of people who inhabit a space. Interface, the global modular flooring company, today unveiled a unique carpet tile range, Conscient, that emits virtually zero VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), one of the biggest contributors to poor indoor air quality.

Whilst outdoor air quality has been a high priority for Governments and business alike for many years, indoor air quality has not received the same attention. However, studies including research from US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) illustrate that people spend up to 90 per cent of their day indoors where pollution levels can be 100 times higher than pollution found outdoors. These studies are driving manufacturers like Interface to develop new solutions designed to improve indoor air quality in the built environment.

The creation of Positive spaces™ designed with people in mind paves a better way for the construction and furnishing of buildings allowing the occupants to be the primary consideration when concepting a structure.

Conscient Composition

Conscient, provides the carpet tile industry with a new benchmark, addressing the impact that the products used in a space have when measuring indoor air quality. Each layer of the carpet tile has been selected to provide people who use a space with the best air quality without compromising on the design, aesthetic or sustainability of their environment.

A proprietary combination of coarse yarn and bio-based yarn make up the carpet pile construction. This unique structure not only reduces the number of harmful VOCs that are released into the atmosphere, but it also captures and retains fine dust particles that can contribute to poor indoor air quality in the building, or that are potential irritants to the people who inhabit them.

The Conscient collection comes as standard with CircuitBac Green, an innovative backing created with a mix of bio-plastic and mineral filler. Interface’s Modular Fusion thermal bonding process locks together the layers of the carpet tile, eliminating the need for precoat.

The new backing and Interface’s Cool Carpet® programme (the carbon footprint of the carpet tile is offset for the full life cycle) there is a significant decrease in the environmental footprint. This supports Interface’s move toward creating carbon negative products, and to an overall content of 87 per cent recycled and bio-based materials.

Conscient is another step to creating products which have no impact on the environment aligning with the Mission Zero® promise and supporting the next stage of Interface’s sustainability commitment, Climate Take Back™.

Jan Peter van Deutekom, Product Portfolio Director, Interface, said “Research from the World Green Building Council shows that bad indoor air quality can directly affect the productivity of space users by as much as 8-11 per cent. Whilst there are many considerations when optimising air quality in a building, including ventilation and filtration, having access to products that knit design and sustainability credentials eases the process. In developing Conscient we are supporting better indoor air quality to enable people to stay healthy, well and more productive.”

Independent Certification

Conscient has already been recognized for its ultra-fine particle retention with the GUI GOLD Fine Dust certification from the independent German Test Institute.

Design

Inspired by natural elements, the multi-sensory design supports the concept of tactility enhancing wellbeing in interiors. Presented in six colours ways the earthy range embraces the timeworn effect seen in nature providing a pallette of interior inspiration which works alongside Interface’s Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) range.

Using non-directional installation to mirror nature’s Random Design patterns, the Conscient range reduces installation waste and worn tiles can be replaced without concerns or colour compatibility. Fitting the range with TacTiles® further reduces the need for glue supporting the overall virtually zero VOC compound.

WELL Building Certified Spaces

In line with the WELL Building standard preconditions for flooring, Conscient supports all of the feature concepts for AIR. Backing up air filtration, easy to clean, durable and pollutant trapping, Conscient optimises the user experience to contribute to a spaces’ WELL certification.
